Zero, Don’t Look at It, Look Through It

contemplating zero

In this exploration, I delve into zero, a concept deeply embedded in our lives yet, I think, profoundly misunderstood. The common view of zero as merely an absence or void fails to capture its full essence. Zero is not nothing; it represents a pivotal transition, a concept that defies the simplistic notion of absence.

My journey into understanding zero is not backed by a deep knowledge of physics or mathematics but driven by a philosophical curiosity. While preparing for this post, I discovered “Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea,” a book I think I should probably read for deeper insights and accordingly update this post.

But for now, hear out on what I have come up with myself.

What is zero?

Zero is a multifaceted concept, crucial across mathematics, physics, and philosophy. In mathematics, it revolutionized our numerical system, underpinning the development of algebra and calculus. Physics sees zero as fundamental in theories from quantum mechanics to absolute zero temperatures, where motion ceases. Philosophically, zero symbolizes potentiality and transformation, challenging our perceptions of existence and non-existence.

I think the symbel that we choose to represent zero makes perfect sense: a circle. And in Arabic script zero is depicted as a point, which is pretty much the same think. The circle outlines nothing where a point depicts nothing.

I envision zero as a torus viewed from above, resembling a donut. This shape captures zero’s duality: encompassing everything (the donut) and nothing (the hole). It’s a compelling metaphor for zero’s ability to represent transition and change, mirroring the event horizon where known becomes unknown.

Zero’s significance extends beyond its numerical value, posing existential questions. What does it mean to transition from one state to another? How does zero influence our understanding of the universe?

This exploration is an invitation to rethink our perceptions, to see zero not as emptiness but as a space brimming with potential. In the vast infinity, zero acts as a doorway, urging us to look beyond and discover the interconnectedness of the cosmos.

a birdseye view of zero

As we contemplate zero, let’s approach with humility and an open mind, recognizing the limitations of our knowledge while striving to extend beyond them. Zero is not just a concept but a symbol of the deeper truths about existence itself, a reminder of the continuous flow of transformation that defines both the universe and our inner selves.

Just as an eye can’t look at itself but merely a reflection of itself in a mirror, we can’t look at zero, or nothing as it is everything and nothing and the same time. The torus constantly and instantly turning insideout and outward in on itself. Like the serpent biting it’s own tail.

Zero, a fascinating concept. To be continued…
